Make Your Home More Hygge for the Holidays

The holiday season is a time to enjoy delicious food, great company, and some feel-good Christmas movies. The feeling you get around the holiday season is one of the best ways to conceptualize what hygge really means. It’s essentially elevating a feeling of cozy and unmatched comfort. With it comes a feeling of joy and contentment. The holiday season is the perfect time to transform your space and usher in that hygge feeling for you and your guests. The good news? It’s a feeling that can stay all year long, especially during the cold Maine winters.

Elevate Your Entryway

Make sure that the first thing people see when they pull into your driveway gives off that warm, cozy feeling we have all come to know and love around the holidays. Avoiding harsh, LED Christmas lights and choosing warm, incandescent bulbs is a great place to start. Use natural materials like locally-made wreaths to hang on your front door. Make sure that the same warmth you and your guests feel on your doorstep is brought into your home too. Consider lighting a candle or two in your entryway and decorating with fresh or dried flowers. We all know that good lighting is key! That is why we recommend keeping that warm, white glow inside your home with strategically placed lamps and lighting.

Be Strategic with Smells

A key strategy to achieve hygge in your home is by honing in on the five senses. Utilizing aroma is a great avenue to take as it involves subtlety that can elevate any experience. Lighting candles or burning incense are great ways to make sure a scent permeates your space and envelops your guests. Be careful not to choose a scent that is too overpowering to sensitive noses or to choose a scent that will poorly clash with any food that might be served. We love looking for locally made candles, like Near & Native, which can be purchased at the LL Bean Home Store in Freeport.

Utilize Your Fireplace

The epitome of coziness is sitting around the fireplace sipping on a steamy cup of hot cocoa. Utilize your fireplace area to optimize decoration to its fullest potential. Including warm tones in all of your decor as well as using soft lighting will make you want to huddle around a roaring fire all night. If you have a mantle, be sure to use that space to showcase artwork or holiday cards.

Add to Your Couch

Give your coach the seasonal refresh it deserves! Utilize textures and accessories to add to the atmosphere of your space. Blankets of different textures like faux fur, shearling, and fleece are great additions to throw on a coach to add to the warmth. Adding pillows are also a great way to add color to your home whether that’s incorporating deep reds and greens or playing around with more neutral creams and browns.

The holiday season is perfect to add these small touches to your home to allow you and your guests to feel at ease and as comfortable as possible. If your home is feeling particularly hygge, snap a picture and tag us on instagram @arcadiakitchenandbath to showcase your home!
