Kitchen Remodel: Before & After

We sat down with Caitlin Tucker, Designer on one of our recent Mainely Glamour Project to chat about what the process can look like from start to finish. Each project is different than the next, based on the client’s vision and how much of the original space will be kept. This was a fresh start, and the before and after difference is always so magical!

Tell us a bit about this project.

“We designed this kitchen for a young family who recently relocated to Maine and had previously lived the city life in both New York City and Boston. The client's father was a prominent interior designer and she sells antiques, meaning she had always had a passion for beautifully designed interiors.”

What was the vision for the project?

“The client's vision for their kitchen was family-friendly yet sophisticated. I looked to combine their eclectic style with their love of nature. The core of the design is very classic and we treated things like hardware and lighting as the “Jewelry”, which is more decorative.  We didn’t want anything competing with the design but rather compliment it.”

What were some challenges of the project?

“The first big challenge was taking the small, very awkward existing kitchen with a “weird island” of closets in the middle of their house and completely blowing up the layout. We made it much bigger to accommodate their love of cooking and completely transformed the interior architecture of their home to overall flow better, moving the kitchen completely. We also made their formal dining room more size appropriate as it was too large before and right off the mudroom making it awkward.”

What are some of your favorite aspects of the kitchen?

“The unique granite stone countertop from Surface Creations, called Nordic Fog, dictated the overall aesthetic. We went to the slab yard and we all fell in love with it. The stone was always going to be a big part of the project from the beginning as the clients are big fans of natural stone. We did a large book match on the stone for the larger than most kitchen islands. I also love the mosaic backsplash in the coffee corner from Tile Bar.”
