How to Use Essential Oils in Your Home

At Arcadia Kitchen & Bath, reinventing and recreating a space is always our top priority. We are focused on how to best bring a space to life and make it feel like home for each of our clients. Elements like color and texture are of course involved in our process, but we like to push a little further. We like to add the element of fragrance as an added feature and it is no surprise that using essential oils is one of the best ways to do that. Not only do they smell great, but add an aromatherapeutic benefit that has health benefits beyond the scent alone. Just make sure to check that the essential oil you choose is pet and/or child-safe before use. While many oils have healing properties, some are not safe for the littlest members of your family.

For The Kitchen

A great place to utilize essential oils is in the kitchen. This is one of the messier rooms as it gets used the most often, and can collect the most grime and grease. When cleaning up or just refreshing your kitchen use a citrus essential oil like Lemon or Orange. Peppermint can help fight off any lingering odors while killing bacteria. Place a few droplets in your trash can before setting the trash bag in, or use it with a bit of baking soda and warm water to scrub surfaces. Another wonderful way to set the room back to a bit of order is by creating a simmer pot by boiling water on the stove and dropping about a teaspoon of your favorite essential oil. Let the steam envelope the room, and hang around while it is happening. It smells amazing!

For the Master or Guest Bath

The bathroom is another perfect place to keep essential oils, especially ones that help heal the skin, and relax the body. Tea tree oil is known for its healing properties, as it has antibacterial and anti-fungal properties. It can be used for wound care or as a treatment for acne. It not only helps heal, but it smells fresh and clean. Try adding a few drops to a steamy bath to unwind and clear your sinuses if you are experiencing a cold or seasonal allergies. We also recommend eucalyptus oil for the ultimate spa experience at home. It will help relax the muscles and ease the mind. It will transform your bathroom experience! If you are looking for a less concentrated scent, consider adding some fresh eucalyptus to your shower for a natural scent release during your daily rinse.

Essential Oil Use for the New England Home

For The Bedroom

Lavender is known to help deepen sleep and prompt relaxation. We suggest keeping a tincture of lavender essential oil on your bedside table. Dab it on areas of your body where joints meet or place a few droplets in a cup of hot water to have the scent fill the rest of the room. Another wonderful oil to have in the bedroom is ylang ylang as it has been found to help with insomnia. If you find you love using essential oils in your home, consider purchasing a diffuser, which will allow the scent to fill a space throughout the day.

Aromatherapy can be a wonderful element that can go forgotten. The benefits of essential oils can shift an entire space, making it feel fresh, clean and relaxing. Be sure to give them a try, and see how it can help both your body and your Maine home.
