How to Make Your Own Floral Arrangements

Nothing brightens up a new countertop like a bouquet of beautifully arranged flowers! It is so easy to accomplish ourselves, just by using flowers from our local markets. As long as you have the right supplies, you will be able to create beautiful arrangements to put anywhere in your home or to use as gifts for all sorts of occasions and celebrations. Nothing looks or smells better than fresh flowers! Here is how we like to approach the floral arrangement process.

Choosing Seasonal Flowers in Maine

Choose Your Blooms

Choosing a flower that is in season is always the best place. Not only will it be easier to find, but it will be fresh! In the spring look for daffodils, geraniums, and peonies. During the summer poppies, dahlias, and daylilies are in season. In the fall and winter look for lavender, sunflowers, honeysuckle, pansies, and roses. Be sure to add greenery to your arrangements to give them a fuller look that will add both variety and texture. A final step after you have chosen your flowers is to remove any leaves that will sit below the water’s surface.

Choose Your Vase

The best way to pick a vase is to first look at the length of the stems or greenery you are arranging. You can always cut down the flower, but if you’re hoping for a bolder more dramatic style choose a tall vase that will also display the stems. If you’re hoping for something that will look more traditional, a shorter vase with flowers cut so they pop out just above the rim of the vase will give you a softer, more romantic look. Match the vase to the aesthetic of the interior it will be sitting in. Pick a glass vase if your space is more modern, and choose a pitcher style if you have a more traditional space. Mason jars and old glass bottles are another great way to display flowers, don’t be afraid to repurpose and get creative!

Time to Arrange

Start by adding the tallest flowers first and then layer or choose a type of pattern to move in, whether it’s more organic or more organized. Decide what ratio of each flower you want to showcase or if you want to fill out the whole vase with just one type. Consider tying a bow around the vase if it is a gift. If the flowers came with a packet be sure to mix the powder into the water before adding it to the vase. If you’re looking for an all-natural, DIY flower food, create a mixture with two tablespoons of vinegar, two tablespoons of sugar, and one quart of lukewarm water. Be sure to change out the water every three to four days to keep your blooms fresh and happy!

Your home will come alive with fresh flowers and they are a great way to add life and vibrancy to a space. If you find that houseplants are too tricky to keep up with, a floral arrangement can achieve the same look as a houseplant, but will of course hold more color and elegance. Our favorite place to look for inspiration is on the Better Homes and Gardens website as well as purchasing from local flower farms like Broadturn Farm. Happy arranging!
