The Return of an Old Friend

Wallpaper, once a hallmark of the glamorous maximalist homes of the 1920s, is experiencing a resurgence in contemporary design. During this bygone era, women took the lead in adorning their living spaces with not just decorative paper, but also wall coverings crafted from upholstery materials to seamlessly complement the furniture in their opulent abodes.

Although the fervor for wallpaper waned over the decades, a recent trend has emerged. In our initial design meetings with clients, we are increasingly witnessing requests for vibrant wallpaper patterns to infuse character into their living spaces. A departure from the mundane neutrals of the past, people are now eager to breathe life and personality into their homes, and we couldn't be more thrilled about this design renaissance. Wallpaper has the unique ability to offer insights into the personality of the inhabitant and set the overall mood for a room, making it a powerful design element.

We've recently completed projects, notably a couple of bathrooms, where the inclusion of statement wallpaper has transformed the entire aesthetic. In such projects, we leverage the wallpaper as a focal point, drawing inspiration from its patterns and colors to inform decisions about other finishes like grout color, hardware, and tile patterns. The result is a harmonious blend of elements that contributes to a cohesive and visually stunning space.

Choosing the right wallpaper can either mark the beginning or the conclusion of the design process. In one recent project with a Jaws theme, we reveled in the exciting exploration of numerous wallpaper options. The journey involved cycling through a plethora of choices, ultimately selecting samples that seamlessly aligned with the chosen theme. Once the wallpaper became the anchor, we then embarked on the task of selecting complementary finishes.

For the space below, the client's desire for pops of color led us through various iterations, considering alternative finishes, paint colors, and even changes to the bathroom tiles. Yet, we landed on the decision to let the wallpaper serve as the unifying force, bringing together a vibrant spectrum of colors and finishes. This meticulous process exemplifies the dedication we invest in finding the perfect wallpaper to elevate and complete our clients' spaces.
