Signs It’s Time to Hire a Professional

Home renovations or even small remodels can feel both exciting and daunting as you can often visualize the end result, but have a harder time understanding what will go into the project in order to get to the finish line. Luckily we have years of experience under our belt and can help you focus on what this process entails, and the large or small undertaking it can be. It is often a question for our clients of what can they do themselves, and when should they bring us in. DIYing is a respectful art, and we acknowledge that. That is why we have put together a few questions to ask yourself in the beginning stages of your process.

1. Is the task I am thinking about doing unsafe for me?

Is your ideal project a full room renovation? Is it just one aspect of a room you aren’t excited about? Are the countertops really bothering you, or could your vision come to life with a swapped light fixture? Determining how much you want to change, and how complicated that process can be is a good place to start. If a project involves plumbing, electricity, or large power tools for cutting or moving, it might be good to weigh the benefits of professional help. While there is certainly a time and a place for that Mainer do-it-yourself attitude, it should not take priority over your health and safety.

2. Do I know how to use the tools required?

Once you have decided what exactly your new undertaking is and what it will entail, it's time to begin a list of what you will need for the best execution possible. Do you have both the tools required and the safety materials in order to keep everything and everyone in the best condition possible during the process? Familiarize yourself first with all the supplies you will need for the project and see if they are items you will feel comfortable using and have the budget for.

3. Is this something I am interested in learning to do or am I just trying to save money?

Next, determine why you want to take on a renovation or home improvement task. Are you craving a project to work on during the weeknights or weekends? Are you wanting to pick up a new skill and try something new? Are you looking to save money and think you have what it takes to properly execute your vision? It is great to ask yourself these questions so that you have a realistic look at what you’re attempting to accomplish and why.

4. Do I have the capacity to take this on?

Finally, and maybe the hardest question to answer. “Do I have the time and effort for this project?” Sometimes the money is there, the supplies are there, and the excitement is also present, but will you have the energy and the time, and perhaps patience, to fully take this project on? Do you have a second bathroom to use, if the one you are working on is out of order for a few weeks? Do you have the ability to cook meals and get creative in a room other than the kitchen if your updates are taking longer than expected? These are even questions to ask yourself when you bring on a professional. Either way, you will have to adapt and get creative while the project is underway, and sometimes that can feel like a full-time job in itself!

Home renovations add value to your home and make your space feel brand new! We love to be a part of that process and make your dream kitchen or bath remodel a reality.
