Upgrade Lighting

Before you add a second floor or tear down a wall, you can start by giving your lighting an upgrade. Choosing elegant and more modern light fixtures will instantly update your home and will be a great compass when choosing the rest of the decor. Try to use a few different light features in a room to align with your desired mood for the space. Bright lighting is great when you’re trying to get things done, but being able to shift into softer mood lighting is perfect for hosting or relaxing in the evening with a glass of wine. Make it elegant and functional by noting these little details when upgrading your fixtures.

Focus on Cabinets & Drawers

Another great step to take when creating your perfect space is updating cabinets and drawers. These tend to take on a lot of wear and tear over the years because they are a highly functional part of the space. Update them with new hardware, and a chic paint color and they will feel entirely brand new. You can even swap them out entirely with a beautiful wood and give your kitchen a fresh makeover. You would be surprised by how quickly this can brighten and refresh a room that once felt tired and outdated.

Play with Colors & Textures

On the topic of painting cabinets, consider incorporating pops of color, like this fresh green we chose for The Cook’s Kitchen in Steep Falls, Maine. This trick with color can play out in any room whether it be the dining room, living room, or bathroom. Decide on the mood of that room by determining what activities will take place in it, or how much light it gets. We can always help with making big color decisions. In fact, it’s one of our favorite things to do! Another great shift to take is by choosing a texture like wood or tile to implement into a room. It feels very modern and will definitely increase the value of your home, not to mention look gorgeous.

Don’t Overlook the Smaller Rooms

When thinking about completely redoing a room, it can be best to do so in a smaller space that will have a big impact, like a bathroom. Flooring and fixtures in bathrooms can tire easily and older bathrooms can make your home feel more outdated than it really is. Updating a smaller room like this will feel like such a special luxury and a big shower or bathtub will be the cherry on top!

Create Open Spaces

Those larger decisions like tearing down a wall and adding a more open floor plan to the design of your home might be the exact type of shift you’re ready to take on this year. Removing walls or creating more exit and entry points to a room will allow light and flow of traffic to move differently, completely reimagining your home as it was before.
